Passenger Terminal Expansion Works

The Hamad International Airport terminal expansion project will include an additional 140,000 sq.m terminal building, located airside, adjoining the existing terminal building through Concourse C with an axis that will culminate into a central garden. It will include a new transfer area which will help shorten passenger’s connection time and will improve their overall transfer experience at HIA. This will also contribute to servicing the continued growth of HIA’s national carrier Qatar Airways.

The Passenger Terminal Expansion Works, Central Concourse Building and Early Works (PTEW) was awarded to the joint venture of Midmac Contracting, TAV Tepe Akfen Investment Construction and Taisei Corporation on November 2019.

The scope of work consisted of:

  • Central Concourse Expansion Building and Apron Works
  • Diversion of existing utilities
  • Demolition of existing Fixed Jet Bridges
  • Underground Automated People Mover Station Box

Remote Underground Chilled Water network connecting Central Utility Plants

Scope of dewatering works is consist of the construction of APM Box, Cup 2 & Cup 4 connection and Central concourse (Pile caps). The APM box structure is composed of a 151.2m long by 25m wide with 2 nos. of monitoring well and 14 nos. of deepwells at the depth of 27m BGL. For Central concourse (Pile Caps) is composed of a 4m long by 4.4m wide with sump pumping technique is implemented and for CUP 2 & CUP 4 connection which is composed of 100m long by 9.4m wide consisting of sump pumping using surface suction diesel pump technique supplementary with trenching system.

The groundwater level encountered at the range of +0.39m QNHD and -1.19m QNHD at West and East of existing Concourse and the groundwater level at APM area is found in the range of -0.78m QNHD and -1.42m QNHD.

The system is supplied complete with pumps with standby units, power supply system, control panels with suitable alarm system and 24hr monitoring team.

Qetaifan Island Infrastructure Works

Qetaifan Island North is located off Lusail City, Qatar. Designed to be Qatar’s future iconic destination; the project spans approximately 1.3 million square meters. The island also features exciting entertainment attractions, luxurious hotels, pedestrian friendly streets and world class facilities.

The project, Qetaifan Island North Phase 1 Development Package 4 – Infrastructure Streetscape & Linear Park. The project is consist of the construction of shafts/manholes for Foul Water & Surface Water drainage in Qetaifan Island.

WJ installed the deep well dewatering scheme supplemented by sump pumps and Diesel pumps for 29 shafts which has a depth of -3m BGL to -11m BGL & Width of maximum 8mx8m.The trenches depth of -3m BGL to -6m BGL and length of 1700m & Width of 6m. This system will facilitate an advanced drawdown keeping a dry and stable working condition at all times as the excavation works progresses. Additionally, The ground fissures/ cavities are encountered, additional sump pumps can be installed to try managed the situation. In total 18 dewatering wells installed for UR12 area and 12 deep wells for SW1 area, 24 Diesel pumps and 14 Sump pumps were used for SW2 and SW4 area.

We have two discharge locations in this project, with Electromagnetic flow meters to monitor the flow rate. For the quality control of discharging water have a combination setup of Lamella clarifier with settlement tank.

Although the Project began at the start of August 2020, The installation works has progressed during day time hours, only monitoring to be undertaken during Night hours.

Road Surrounding FIFA Training Site Adjacent to Golf Course (Zone-69)

WJ Groundwater is a specialist contractor for providing different types of dewatering solutions for various types of infrastructure projects including Deep Shafts, Shallow Manholes, Pipeline Trenches, Underground Tanks, etc.

The Road Surrounding FIFA Training Site Adjacent to Golf Course (Zone-69) is located Lusail, Doha, State of Qatar and it is a part of Ashghal’s Interim Road Improvement Doha South Phase -2 Project. The Works comprise the construction of temporary/permanent roads including Surface Water Drainage, Foul Sewage, TSE, ITS, Telecommunication, Protection of existing utilities, provision of future services ducts, street lighting works, traffic signals and water main dry leg crossings.

WJ Qatar was appointed by Al Mohannadi to provide stable and dry working conditions for the excavation of Shallow Manholes and Open Trench of Surface Water Drainage and Foul Sewage. WJ proposed a cost-effective Sump Pumping method for dewatering approximately 80 shallow manholes with depth varies from 3.0m to 6.0m below the existing ground level.

Since the Discharge of groundwater to the Lusail Stormwater network and also to maintain the water quality as per the Lusail requirement, we have installed Lamella Tanks with a capacity of up to 100 liters per sec to reduce the Turbidity and TSS.

Lusail Expressway

Lusail Expressway is one of the largest among 30 road projects to be developed as part of Qatar’s seven-year Expressway Programme.

Initiated in 2010 to connect people and places across the city of In 2010, Qatar’s seven-year Expressway Programme consists of 30 road projects, with the aim of connecting people and places across the city of Doha and wider Qatar. Nine hundred (900) kilometres of new road network involving a number of underpasses, flyovers and multi-level interchanges are expected to be delivered.

The Lusail Expressway is one of the biggest to be developed, with 5.3 km of four-lane highway in both directions, two cofferdams and three major interchanges; the Al Wahda Interchange, Onaiza Interchange, and the Pearl Interchange.

The Expressway will also have two service lanes in the multi-level interchange areas, and include a complex network of tunnels, flyovers and junctions in order to meet the future traffic demands by providing easy and speedy connectivity.

Dewatering of the project proved a challenge, as unforeseen and unexpected cavities and fissured flows were encountered, with at the peak flow in excess of 10,000 m3/hr for one of the underpasses! However, WJ rose to the challenge and dewatering was achieved with deepwell system and supplemented with sump pumping.
